A Portsmouth Streetcar glides across a bridge and over a man-made spillway near New Boston’s Millbrook Park in this c. 1903 postcard. The 150-foot waterway was constructed of concrete and directed any overf low of water from an adjacent 40-acre lake down to the Ohio River. Water cascading down the 10-inch-tall steps created a place of serenity and meditation. (Paul O’Neill Collection.)

Motorists begin traveling eastbound on Route 52 through New Boston as waters recede from yet another flood in March 1933. This flood reached a crest of 60.5 feet and is listed as one of the highest Ohio River floods in Scioto County’s history. With more advance warning than during previous floods, citizens were able to prepare for nature’s wrath, and overall damage resulting from the flood was minimized. (Paul O’Neill Collection.)
